Explicit Dynamics FEA Assessment of an Overpressure Event
Problem
Overpressure events caused by explosions release high amounts of energy over very small time periods. Traditional static analysis methods cannot account for complex load paths, material failure and strain rate dependency. This can result in over designed structures or designs that do not account for all potential failure modes.
Solution
Finite element analysis (FEA) using explicit dynamics allows a less conservative assessment of the structural response and provides an opportunity to assess and improve failure modes in the structure. The modelling approaches we employ allow us to understand and account for:
Risk of material failure and structural collapse
Energy absorption via plastic deformation
Importance of strain rate effects and material selection
Contact between components due to large deformations
Areas where the structure has been underdesigned
Result
Explicit dynamic FEA models can be used to understand and reduce the risk of failures in overpressure events. These models provide engineers with the tools to ensure that health and safety obligations are met.
