FEA Analysis of Transportation Systems

Problem
Understanding load paths and stresses distributions in transport structures can be difficult and CAD embedded FEA packages rarely provide suitable output to be able to assess these structures with confidence. Inadequate modelling, especially of welded components, can lead to uncertainty in the structural performance and the risk of on-road failures.

Solution
Finite element analysis (FEA) with the appropriate use of shell elements and solid element sub-modelling provides an opportunity to accurately capture load paths and stress distributions. The modelling approaches we employ allow us to:

  • Evaluate load paths within the structure

  • Determine hot spot stresses for comparison with allowable stresses

  • Assess weld stress ranges for an estimate of weld fatigue life

Result
FEA modelling provides engineers confidence in the reliability of the design and ensures that the risk of on-road failures is minimised.
